Inside my car I turned my air conditioning on full blast. Sweat chilled on my skin, jelling in place. I turned the air down before I got a headache from the temperature change.
Is it too late for me to call it a night and watch the second movie? I seriously don't think I have enough grog for this shit, and that's the first sentence!
Phil is facing away from Anita in the car, clearly upset about what happened back at the unit. How did I know that? Anita the mind reader. No, Anita the not so stupid.
Anita then yammers on about how Phil is curled up over himself like he is in pain, how she just bullied a very fragile women. Bullied no, be a complete and utter bitch to yes. Believe it or not there actually is a difference.
She asks Phil about the freak parties, he requests that she drops her off. She asks if its at Guilty Pleasures, when he agrees she asks after his car in which case we learn that he doesn't drive and Monica dropped him off at her office.
Anita gets all hulk mad at this news prompting him to ask what her beef is. She replies that Monica is human and betrayed humans to vampires, Phil questions her logic by asking if that is worse then JC choosing Anita to be the vamp champions, she shoots back that she expects treachery from vamps. Phil points out that she might look at it that way, but he doesn't.
Anita responds with a low blow, saying that Rebecca looked betrayed causing Phil to flinch, Anita has another snark about how she emotionally abuses everyone she meets.
Well here's an idea... STOP FUCKING DOING IT!
Anita goes on about how vamps only look after themselves, and how Monica not only screwed over her own kind. She screwed over her best friend, as much as I hate to admit to it, I can stand behind this sort of logic.
Phil turns to face her, asking that if her friend needed something she would do anything for them. She amends that she would do almost anything for them. Again a reasonable response.
Phil goes on to ask if loyalty and friendship is important to her, isn't that what she just said? Anita replies that uh.. Yeah... Duh.
He goes on about how that means she thinks that Monica betrayed her in such a fashion its a worse crime then anything the vampires ever did.
Bit of a bloody stretch there mate...
I shifted in my seat, not happy with the way the conversation was going. I am not one for personal analysis. I know who I am and what I do, and that's usually enough. Not always, but most of the time. "Not anything; I don't believe in absolutes. But, if you want the short version, yes, that's why I'm angry at Monica."
Brilliant, now that we've got that sorted can we get back to solving the damn mystery? No...? Ok then.
Instead of moving this plot forwards, Phil goes on to state that Monica is afraid of Anita (Of course!) Anita goes on to show what a awesome role model she is, by smiling in a nasty fashion and stating "I hope the little bitch is sweating it out, big time." Vindictive bitch, also holy comma abuse!
Phil states that she is, and Anita muses about how he doesn't seem to approve of her scaring Monica, she doesn't give a fuck though because she's quiet pleased with the outcome.
\
They're getting close to the club, and Anita realizes that not only has Phil not answered her question about the parties, he seems to me avoiding it all together, so she once again asks about them.
He instead asks if she really threatened to cut out Monica's heart, she admits she did then once again asks about the parties.
Phil asks if she really would cut her heart out, Anita responds that she'll answer his question if he answers hers. He replies that he's already told her what the parties are like and that he stopped going a few months ago, Anita asks why, he bitches that she asks a lot of personal questions before answering that he was worried that he would end up like Rebecca or worse.
I wanted to ask what was worse, but I let it go. I try not to be cruel, just persistent. There are days when the difference is pretty damn slight.
What is this shit?? Maybe I'm simply doing it wrong, but I can be persistent without being cruel....
She asks Phil to give her a call if he gets another invite to another party, he naturally asks why, she responds that she needs to go. She pulls up outside Guilty Pleasures, thinking that it looked closed, there isn't a real good timeline with this book, but if I was going to assume I'd say it'd be anywhere between 1-2pm, I'm not sure that any sort of club is open at that time, let alone A VAMPIRE RUN STRIP CLUB!
Phil states that she really doesn't want to go to one of those parties, Anita replies that if she doesn't solve these murders her friend will die, and that she has no illusions about what will happen to her if she fails.
Phil pretty much turns into Jacob Black with a 'yeah yeah' responds, stating that she never answered his question about Monica, Anita shoots back that he never really explained that party.
He looks down at his lap, saying that there is a party tonight (convenience alert!!!!) and that if she has to go he'll take her, he goes on to state that the parties are always held at different locations.
Wait, are they illegal? Because that seems kinda inconvenient never really knowing where a party is until the last minute.
So because he doesn't know where it's at, he asks her how to get in contact. She writes her number on the back of her business card, stating that he can always leave a message on her answering machine. He shoves her card into his pants and gets out of the car, he opened the door, and the heat washed into the car like the breath of a dragon.
Must be a weak ass dragon then, since most dragon's I've researched would kill you by merely breathing near you.... Then again, my mood is quickly sinking and any reason to post Toothless photo's is a good reason for me. (Yay for new obsession!)
Phil then leans against the roof, informing her that he's held up his end of the deal, so would she really hurt Monica in such a fashion?
Shockingly!!!! Anita replies that yes she would, he responds in the cliche way of 'remind me not to piss you off' before informing her that she'll need to wear something to the party that shows off her scars (Well she'd be fucked if she hadn't been used as a chow toy, the convenience level of this book is officially reaching neck deep right now)
He then goes on to ask if she is as good a friend as she is an enemy, Anita... Doesn't really reply, instead stating that "You don't want me as an enemy, Phillip. I make a much better friend."
Phil replies in a fashion that seems more then slightly sarcastic to me, before shutting the door and walking up to the club, he knocks on the main door and someone opens up, Anita catches a glimpse of a white arm before the door shuts.
Security issue much? Clearly if you want to rob a vampire run club during the day all you have to do is knock on the front door. Haven't these people heard of staff entrances with peepholes?
Anita wonders if the white arm belongs to a vampire, thinking that before she thought vamps couldn't be up and about during the day, but until last night she never thought they could fly either (Not sure why, if I remember correctly flying isn't exactly a rare ability among master vampires)
She goes on to wonder if they had been expecting him, and if they'd set him out on his flirtatious best, and is happy they didn't try it with Monica since she is far from happy with her right now.
She goes on to think that she doesn't believe that Phil is lying about the freak parties, but because he is a stripper he doesn't have what she would call a good character reference.
She goes on to think that he's also a vamp junkie and that she knows nothing about him, for all she knows he could be there to lure her off somewhere just like Monica did, she think that she doesn't know and she really does need to.
I can live with sort of paranoia, it's something I'd more then likely be feeling in her situation so can't snark to much about it.
She thinks that the only place she can go for answers is 'Dead Dave's' not only is it probably the only place in the distract that she's welcome at, but they also serve a mean hamburger and is run by an ex-cop who lost his badge after he was bitten.
Dave liked to help out, but he resented the prejudice of his former comrades. So he talked to me. And I talked to the police. It was a nice little arrangement that let Dave be pissed off at the police and still help them.
For some reason this fact makes her nearly invaluable, and since she's on retainer this pleases her boss since I guess he only see's the dancing dollar signs.
We learn that because it is still daytime Dave himself would naturally be tucked up nice and snug in his coffin, but his business partner Luther would be there.
For some reason now that the distract is vampire owned no one parks there anymore, which Anita naturally takes advantage of while still snarking about that fact.
We then learn that Saint Louis is a real hot spot for vampire watchers, the next popular being New York, but they Saint Louis has a lower crime rate. There was a gang that had gone all vampire in New York. They had spread to Los Angeles and tried to spread here. The police had found the first recruits chopped into bite-sized pieces.
The police apparently did nothing about this gruesome murder, as Anita goes on about how their vampire community thrives on the main-stream and the fact that having a vamp gang could ruin everything for them so they just... Cleaned up the mess.
Way to promote vigilante movements there LKH...
I'd had nightmares for weeks about walls that bled and dismembered arms that crawled along the floors all by themselves. We never did find the heads.
No, we never do get a cool scene about vampire limbs trying to kill Anita as she kills the vamps in case you were wondering.
