Voices floated through the darkness. Dreams.
This chapter is going to be really painful, isn't it?
Well the vampires are apparently bickering over the fact that maybe they shouldn't have moved her, Anita slowly comes to the realization that she isn't actually dreaming and that if Aubrey had hit her with a closed fist she wouldn't be here bitching about how sore she is.
When asked if she's alright she opens her eyes which of course hurts and moves her head which makes her throw up.
When once again asked if she's alright she internally bitches at why people ask that when clearly one isn't alright then replies with a sarcastic "just peachy keen." Which confuses the female voice but makes JC relived since he thinks that being able to make jokes means that she isn't too badly hurt. Now I'm not sure about that logic, my ability to use sarcasm goes through the roof when I'm badly injured, and since sarcasm isn't something that just randomly appeared in the last decade or so I call bullshit on vamps not knowing what it is.
So JC sits Anita up which as one would guess ends badly as she throws up all over the place, JC holds a cold hand against her forehead while speaking softly in French, the pain suddenly fades causing Anita to wonder what happened as JC holds her lightly against his chest.
Theresa asks JC what he's done indicating that all isn't right, JC responds that Nicky needs Anita too be somewhat functional so STFU and leave a bit of mystery will ya?
Anita opens her eyes and realizes that they are in a dungeon, as in old school dungeon complete with a barred wooden door, empty chains hanging off the walls and torches reflecting off everything in an eerie way, as Anita points out in her usual internal way the only thing missing from this scene was a rack and a muscle bound, black hood wearing male with a 'I love mum' tattoo on his arm.
Anita is suspicious about the lack of pain considering how bad she felt before and is surprised to find that she can even stand, sure there is a small throbbing reminder of what was but she can move without having to empty her stomach.
Theresa smirks and comments about how Anita is a mighty quick healer, causing Anita to ask how. Which causes yet another pissing contest as Theresa responds that Anita should ask JC, causing him to bite back that she doesn't know how to do what he did, in which case she points out that even if she did know she wouldn't have done it.
JC explains that Anita had a concussion, was badly hurt and he was worried that she would had died without medical intervention, but since Nicky wouldn't let them take her to the hospital until they'd spoken JC had decided to share some of his life-force with her.
Anita asks what that means exactly, JC spreads his hands and says that he has no words for it. Theresa calls bullshit and says that what he did was the first step to Anita becoming his human servant.
Anita responds that it can't be true because he didn't bespell her with his eyes or bite her, which makes me wonder how she would know. If I was going around with that sort of power I'd make sure to do a bit of memory deleting why rummaging around.
Theresa scoffs at how stupid Anita is, pointing out that a true servant is never bitten, never be hurt and ages just as slowly as vampires do. Anita confirms how slow she is, though honestly I probably should give her some lenience since she did just have a major concussion, and JC adds that he gave her some of his stamina.
Anita then asks if he is experiencing her pain. What, I mean... Where was that... How did she... WHY WOULD YOU ASK THAT??????????
JC says no you moron, the pain is gone he's just made her a lot harder to hurt.
Dear god, Anita STILL doesn't understand and Theresa snaps pointing out that what she's been given is usually reserved as a great gift to those who have proven themselves worthy, not because they have a concussion and need to speak with the local master.
Anita asks JC if that means that she's somewhat in his power and Theresa spits out that no, it actually means the opposite, she now has a better defense against all vamp powers, vampire servants serve out of loyalty nothing more.
Theresa says that that's a bad thing in Anita's case because she owes JC nothing, I'd be a lot more worried about the fact that she's a renown vampire hunter and now has a stronger defense against all vamps. But you know, what do I know?
JC's hair has dried in unruly curls which somehow make him look more real, when Anita asks him why he did what he did, JC points out that if she died he would be punished and that Aubrey is already in deep shit for injuring her in the first place/
Starting to leave JC tells Anita that someone will be along shortly to take her to Nicky, once JC closes the door behind him and slides all the locks home the chapter finishes with this.
His voice floated through the bars, rich, almost bubbling with laughter, "And perhaps, because I liked you." His laugh was bitter, like broken glass.
