Before we get on with this craptastic book, I want to give a shout out to those of you who have been spreading my blog around. Really appreciate guys, I'm giving you all internet cookies!
Right, So this chapter begins with Catherine's taxi vanishing into the night as she escapes from this book relatively unharmed.
It doesn't take long for Anita to start bitching, finding the humid air hard to breath, she wouldn't last 3 seconds in Queensland then yeesh.
Aubrey is attempting to use his surroundings to bring up a creepy atmosphere which Anita calls him out on in her usual subtle way causing Aubrey to clench his fists and get all 'me hulk, me mad' JC talks him down again and points out to Anita that if she keeps taunting him there will be a point in which JC won't be able to talk him back down.
Anita responds that it's his job to keep her alive for her meeting with Nicky, a response JC knocks back that while yes, that is his job he won't die because she's an idiot.
JC holds his hand out for Anita, claiming that it will make the walk to where they are heading easier if she acts like a besotted vampire lover. It'd at the very least explain to the police on sight why she has blood on her blouse (she does? why??) and why they are heading to the place he is taking her.
We now get a thrilling conversation about wither or not JC has fed tonight since Anita can never tell with him, which flatters him for some reason or another before answering that no, no he hasn't fed tonight and has he mentioned lately just how much she looks like a triple cheeseburger with the lot?
Anita naturally freaks out and tries to pull her hand free, JC stops this by pointing out that A) he is a fuckton stronger then her and B) struggling is exciting to predators and will increase his urge to chomp down on her.
Once asked why he didn't feed beforehand he replies that he was ordered not to and doesn't know why which makes him nervous for some reason.
My thoughts is that his master just enjoys power trips and is maybe hoping that JC will chow down on Anita giving Nicky a good reason to punish him.
It appears that JC is taking her to a seedy, no name hotel. Right about now i'd be wondering if there really was a master behind this or if JC was just wanting to get in my pants.
But no! Anita has more important things on her mind like how JC's hair looks like 'black diamonds' when it rains and the fact that the blood on her blouse is coming out since cold water is good for fresh bloodstains. This is the real reason I want to read this book people, who gives a crap about the murders and The vampire espionage!
Suddenly! A wild police car appears!
Anita tenses, so JC pulls her against him. While this is happening the car turns a spotlight on to search the shadows, apparently they sweep the distract regularly since they've realized that tourism would die off if they all got eaten by the things that drew them there in the first place.
Seriously? Everyone is going to St. Louis to see vamps? I could understand Louisiana with the whole Ann Rice thing (I'd also mention true blood but this book was released years before) or Vegas because come-on, all the good tourist magnets end up in Vegas.
JC being the womanizer that he is made out to be, grabs Anita's face and tries to force her to look at him, which she resists because she's worried about being bespelled. A worry JC brushes away with a promise and the threat that if the police get involved he can't promise that nothing will happen to her friend.
So they kiss, the police spotlight moves over them and Anita relaxes letting JC kiss her until her tongue touches his fangs which reminds her that sucking a vamps face probably isn't the best idea in the world and pulls back. JC keeps her trapped against him, his breath harsh and his pulse running, when I first read this I was wondering why such a simple kiss has him so worked up, like come on he's suppose to be the vampire Casanova here. It turns out though that he is losing control of his hunger. Abruptly letting Anita go he leans against a nearby car and just breaths, after 5 or so minutes he walks past her and into the hotel calling over his shoulder that Nicky is waiting for them inside.
Anita wonders at the fact that JC doesn't try and take her hand, the fact that he is remaining out of reach seems to surprise her somewhat. Not sure why, if I was her I'd be glad that the hungry vamp was staying out of easy reach.
The guy sitting behind the reception desk glances up from the magazine he was reading to leer at Anita in a suggestive way, apparently this place gets a lot of vampires bring back their sex 'n' snack back here.
JC doesn't stop and just swiftly makes his way up the stairs, Anita, not being able to go 2 seconds without thinking about herself smugly thinks that JC can't trust himself around her since they are no longer pretending to be lovers and that he is making mighty sure to not only stay out of reach but no look at her.
Anita ambles along behind JC, refusing to rush since the vamps can 'just damn well wait' again, normally this sort of attitude doesn't bother me. But her friends life is on the line here, she needs to stop fapping about how awesome and uncaring she is and get her ass in that room before they decide that she'll work better with a dead friend as incentive.
Anita finally wonders into the room, finding it pretty bare besides the three vampires, Aubrey has appeared once again somehow beating JC and Anita to the hotel, the third vampire looks 'how a vampire should' with straight shoulder length black hair, a black full-bodied dress and black three inch high-heels. Be thankful I re-typed that into something less painful to read.
I'm getting the strong impression that LKH watched way to many B-movie vampire flicks as a child because the first thing out of this cliche vampires mouth is 'look into my eyes'
Anita doesn't because she's not a complete idiot which makes the female vamp laugh, the laugh though... well, just read it for yourself.
She laughed, and it had the same quality of touch that Juan-Claude's did. A sound that you could feel with your hands.
She also rolls her R's with some sort of accent that Anita can't place or even bother to make a guess at which means she could come from literally anywhere, but given how cliched she is I'm just going to go and assume it's Eastern European, most likely Romanian.
Aubrey goes to shut the door, putting him behind Anita and out of her line of sight. So she moves so that not only can she see all the vamps but that a wall is at her back, because this book struggles to make a page without some sort of pissing contest we get this.
"Afraid?" Aubrey asked.
"Still bleeding?" I asked.
He crossed his arms over the stain on his shirt. "We shall see who is bleeding come dawn."
"Aubrey, do not be childish." The vampire on the bed stood.
For one LKH needs to stop with pointing out the freaking obvious, we know it's a question, that's why you inserted a question mark at the end of the sentence. She also needs a thesauruses, two 'asked' in a row, tut tut lazy writing and editing there.
So because it makes for such great reading we get another pissing contest, yay! This time though between Anita and the female vamp.
The female vamp (who I'm going to call Missy until we get her name) asks Anita if she wants her to guarantee her friends safety. Anita replies no, JC asks why not since that's what she asked for.
Anita responds that she wants the guarantee from Aubrey's master and Missy here clearly isn't that vamp, which shocks the vamps, Missy tries to make Anita believe that she is Nicky, but while she can tell that all the vamps in the room are ancient, Missy here just doesn't have the power to hold Aubrey's leash.
JC gloats that he knew she wouldn't fall for it, Theresa (Missy's actual name) spits chips saying that JC must have told her. He turns to Anita and asks her to explain how she knew, she explains that she could just tell that Aubrey had more power then Theresa and that she still wants that guarantee and that she is over there stupid games which I actually sympathize with.
For some reason this pisses Aubrey off who moves towards her before JC could react and smacks the living shit out of Anita with one firm smack to the shoulder, causing her to fly back into the wall and see stars, she slides to the floor thinking that nothing hurts, before stating that she's struggling to breath while her chest burns. Either way the world goes black and that's the chapter.
